My dog rubs eyes with paws often, is this normal? (Understanding the common causes)
Okay, so I wanted to share something I noticed my dog doing pretty often. It's that thing where he rubs his eyes with his paws.

My First Observation
Saw my old boy, Max, doing this the other day. He was just sitting there, looking all relaxed, and then he lifted his front paw and gave his eye a good ol' rub. Not aggressively, just a couple of swipes. Made me stop and watch for a bit.
Digging into the Why
At first, I wondered if something was wrong, you know? Like maybe he got dust in his eye or something was irritating him. I went over and took a closer look. His eyes seemed fine – no redness, no weird discharge, nothing obviously stuck in there. He didn't seem distressed or anything.
Then I remembered, shoot, I do that too when I'm tired! Just rub my eyes a bit. And thinking back, Max often does this when he's winding down for a nap or just after waking up. So, maybe it's just his way of saying he's sleepy or getting the sleep out of his eyes.
Possible Reasons I Figured:
- He's just tired.
- Maybe a little itch or tickle, like a stray hair or dust.
- Could be a habit, like how some people fidget.
- Sometimes allergies might make eyes itchy, I guess, though he wasn't showing other signs.
Keeping Tabs On It
I made a point to watch him more closely for a few days. He does it maybe once or twice a day, usually when he's relaxed or, like I said, tired. It's never frantic, and he stops after a few seconds. I checked his eyes again, just to be sure. They have that extra eyelid thing, that pinkish bit in the corner, sometimes I wonder if that gets dry or itchy for him. But everything looked normal.
If he started doing it constantly, or if his eyes looked sore, or if he was whining while doing it, then yeah, I'd be worried. That would signal a trip to the vet for sure. Excessive rubbing is definitely a red flag for something more serious like an infection, injury, or bad allergies.
My Takeaway
So, for now, I'm chalking it up to normal dog behavior. Just one of those quirks they have. It's kinda cute in a way, makes him seem more human. But the key thing, like with most pet stuff, is just knowing your dog and noticing if the behavior changes or becomes excessive. A little eye rub now and then? Probably just fine. Constant rubbing? Time to get it checked out.
