Why does my dog sit on my other dog? Discover the easy ways you can figure out the real reason.

Alright, let me tell you about something I noticed with my two goofballs, Buster and Daisy. For ages, I kept seeing Buster just plop himself down right on top of Daisy. Not like, aggressively pinning her down, but just... sitting. Like she was a furry, slightly confused beanbag chair.

At first, I was a bit worried, you know? I thought, is Buster being mean? Is he trying to bully poor Daisy? She's a bit smaller than him, so naturally, I was watching closely to make sure she wasn't getting hurt or stressed out.

Watching Them Closely

So, I started paying real attention whenever they were chilling together. Here’s kinda what I saw:

  • It usually happened when they were relaxing, like on the big dog bed or sometimes even on the couch next to me.
  • Buster wouldn't just run over and slam down. He'd kinda casually maneuver himself and then slowly lower his butt onto her back or side.
  • Daisy's reaction was key. Most times, she just... let it happen. She'd sigh, maybe shift a little, but she rarely got up or snapped at him. Sometimes she'd even dose off with him partially sitting on her!
  • There was no growling, no teeth-baring, none of that nasty stuff from either of them during these moments.
  • Five minutes later, they could be playing tug-of-war or licking each other's faces.

Seeing all this made me relax a bit. It clearly wasn't a fight or serious aggression. If Daisy was truly unhappy or scared, she’d definitely be showing more signs of distress or trying to get away, or maybe even avoiding Buster altogether, which she wasn't doing.

My Take on the Whole Thing

After watching this whole routine play out dozens of times, I landed on a couple ideas. I really think it's Buster's way of saying, "Hey, I'm kinda the boss around here, but we're cool." It feels like a subtle dominance move. Not aggressive, just a reminder of his place in their little pack structure.

It could also just be about space and resources, even comfy spots. Maybe he wants the prime spot Daisy is already occupying, and instead of making her move, he just decides to... share it in the most awkward way possible? By sitting on her? It's weird, I know.

Sometimes I also wonder if it’s a weird comfort thing for him. Like, he wants to be close to Daisy, maybe feel secure, and his go-to method is this physical closeness, even if it means using her as furniture. It's definitely strange dog logic!

So yeah, that was my journey figuring out the whole dog-sitting-on-dog situation in my house. It went from mild concern to mostly just amusement at Buster's weird habits. Dogs do the strangest things, but as long as everyone's happy and safe, I guess that's just part of their unique personalities shining through.
