So, the other day, I got this idea stuck in my head. My buddy just got a new pup, a little golden retriever mix, full of energy. He asked me, "Hey, you're the baseball nut, got any good dog names?" Challenge accepted, right? I figured, yeah, I can totally find some cool baseball-related names. How hard could it be?
First thing I did was just sit down and think. What pops into my head when I think baseball? Players, obviously. But also, like, the feel of the game, the equipment, the famous places.
I started jotting stuff down on a notepad. Just random thoughts at first. Then I decided to get a bit more organized about it. I spent maybe an hour just brainstorming different categories. You know, trying to cover all the bases, haha.
Player Names (The Obvious Route)
This was the easiest place to start. Plenty of legends out there.

- Yogi (Berra - this one felt pretty good for a dog)

Some solid choices there, but maybe a little too common? I wanted something maybe a bit more unique, but still clearly baseball.

Okay, this felt more creative. Thinking about words you hear during the game.
- Ace (For a top dog, right?)

- Homer (Like a home run, get it?)

- Cooper (From Cooperstown)

I kinda liked 'Slugger' and 'Ace'. Felt strong. 'Homer' was maybe a bit too on the nose, might get annoying yelling that at the park.

Then I thought about places and teams. Some team names just work as names.

- Cubbie (or Cub)

- Wrigley
- Camden
'Wrigley' and 'Fenway' have a nice ring to them, I thought. 'Dodger' is classic too.
So after all that scribbling and thinking, I had a decent list. Sent it over to my friend. The funny thing is, after all that effort, going through old player stats in my head, thinking about iconic moments... you know what he picked? He named the dog 'Buddy'. Just 'Buddy'.
Can't win 'em all, I guess. But hey, it was a fun little exercise. Now I've got a list ready if I ever get another dog. Maybe 'Yogi' or 'Slider'. Yeah, I like 'Slider'.
