You know, sometimes you just start noticing patterns. Weird little things. For me, recently, it was dogs named Bo. Seems like they're everywhere, or maybe I just had a weird run of encountering them.

It really kicked off when I was spending more time walking around my neighborhood, trying to get outside more after being cooped up for ages. Started hitting the local dog park pretty regularly too. Not because I had a dog back then, just liked the vibe, you know? Anyway, that’s where it began.

First Bo I properly registered was this massive, slobbery Newfoundland. Super gentle giant. Heard his owner calling, "Bo, come on boy!". Nice enough name, didn't think much of it.

But then, maybe a week later, different park, different time. This hyperactive Border Collie, chasing a frisbee like its life depended on it. Owner shouts, "Bo, drop it!". Okay, starting to get a little weird. Two Bos in quick succession?

It didn't stop there. Over the next month or so, it felt like every other dog I met was named Bo.

Keeping Tabs on the Bos

So, I kinda started making a mental list. Nothing official, just keeping track in my head when I heard the name. It was almost becoming a game.

  • There was a little fluffy white dog, maybe a Bichon? Definitely a Bo.
  • A grumpy-looking bulldog, snorting his way across the path. Yep, Bo.
  • Even saw a woman with three Dachshunds, and guess what one of them was called? Bo!

I got curious. Why Bo? It's simple, easy to say, sure. I wondered if it was maybe a trend I'd missed. Maybe a famous dog named Bo I didn't know about, besides the former presidential dog, of course. Seemed like as good a reason as any.

I actually got chatting with one of the Bo owners, the one with the Border Collie. Asked him straight up why he picked the name. He just laughed and said it was short, strong, easy to yell. Said he didn't know any other Bos. Liar! Or maybe just unobservant, who knows.

Another time, I asked the lady with the Dachshunds. She said her son named them all, and he just liked the sound of Bo. Fair enough.

So, my little informal investigation didn't exactly uncover a grand conspiracy. Mostly just coincidence and the fact that it's a simple, decent name for a dog. Still, for that stretch of time, it felt like I was living in Bo-ville.

Haven't noticed quite as many lately, maybe the Bo-wave has crested in my area. Or maybe I'm just not paying as much attention anymore. It’s just funny the things you pick up on when you're just out living your life. Makes you wonder what else you're missing.
