Okay, so I wanted to share what happened with our dog, Buster, a few weeks back. He started scratching like crazy, seriously non-stop. At first, I didn't think much of it, maybe just a flea or something, though we keep up with his treatments. But it kept going on for days.
He was mostly going at his sides and his belly. I checked him over, didn't see any fleas, but the skin looked kinda red and irritated where he was scratching the most. Poor guy looked miserable, whining a little sometimes while scratching. It clearly wasn't getting better on its own.
Trying to Find Something That Works
I figured before calling the vet, maybe I could try something simple. I remembered seeing anti-itch stuff for dogs at the pet store. So, I went over there one afternoon. Man, the choices! Sprays, wipes, creams... I stood there for a good ten minutes just looking at everything.
I decided to go with a cream. Seemed like I could put it right on the specific spots that were bothering him. I just grabbed one that mentioned hydrocortisone, seemed like a common ingredient for itching. The box said it was safe for dogs, obviously. Didn't go for anything super expensive, just a basic tube.
Putting the Cream On
Getting home, the next step was actually applying it. Buster isn't a huge fan of being messed with when he's itchy. I got him to lie down, tried to be calm about it.
Here’s what I did:
- Parted the fur gently over the red areas.
- Squeezed just a small amount of cream onto my finger.
- Rubbed it carefully into the irritated skin. Not too hard, just enough to get it on there.
- Tried my best to distract him for a few minutes afterwards so he wouldn't immediately lick it all off. A chew toy worked okay.
It wasn't super easy, he kept trying to squirm away, but we managed. I did this twice a day, morning and evening, like the instructions suggested.
Watching for Results
Honestly, I wasn't sure if it would do much. But after about a day, maybe day and a half, I noticed he wasn't scratching quite as frantically. I kept applying the cream. By day three, the redness was definitely looking better, much less angry and inflamed. And the scratching? Way, way down. He seemed much more comfortable.
We kept using the cream for about five days total, just to make sure the itch was really gone. After that, we stopped, and thankfully, the scratching didn't come back. His skin looked normal again.
So, yeah, that was my experience. Just a simple cream, but it did the job for Buster's itchy spots this time around. It was definitely worth trying before making a vet appointment, saved some hassle and money, and most importantly, stopped him from being so itchy and uncomfortable. Just had to be consistent with putting it on and trying to stop the licking right after.
