Alright, let me tell you about my latest DIY dog toy project – the burrow toy! My golden retriever, Max, is always digging and burying things, so I thought, "Why not give him a safe and fun outlet for that behavior?"

Planning and Gathering Materials:

  • First, I had to brainstorm. I wanted something durable, washable, and safe.
  • I decided to use some fleece scraps I had lying around. Fleece is soft, easy to work with, and doesn't fray easily. Plus, it's machine washable!
  • Then, I raided my stash of old toys. I needed some small plush toys to stuff inside the burrow.
  • Of course, I needed my trusty sewing machine, scissors, pins, and thread.

Creating the Burrow:

  • I started by cutting out a large rectangle of fleece – about 24 inches by 18 inches.
  • Next, I folded the rectangle in half, right sides together, and sewed along the long edge and one short edge, creating a basic pouch.
  • I turned the pouch right side out and folded over the top edge about an inch to create a casing for a drawstring.
  • I sewed around the folded edge, leaving a small opening to thread the drawstring through.
  • For the drawstring, I used a long strip of fleece, folded it in half, and sewed it along its length to create a sturdy cord.
  • I threaded the drawstring through the casing using a safety pin and tied the ends together. Now, I could cinch the top of the burrow closed.

Stuffing the Burrow:

  • This was the fun part! I gathered all those old, small plush toys.
  • I made sure to remove any squeakers or loose parts that Max could potentially swallow. Safety first!
  • I stuffed the toys inside the fleece burrow, making sure to fill it up nicely but not overstuff it, so Max could still dig around.

Introducing the Toy to Max:

  • I presented the burrow toy to Max, and he was immediately intrigued!
  • He sniffed around it, pawed at it, and then started digging like crazy!
  • He loved pulling the small toys out of the burrow and carrying them around.
  • It kept him entertained for ages!

The Result:

Max absolutely loves his new burrow toy. It's been a great way to keep him busy and entertained, especially on rainy days when he can't go outside to dig in the garden. Plus, it was a fun and easy project that used up my fabric scraps. Win-win!
