So, I finally did it. Got myself an Irish Wolfhound puppy. Well, 'puppy' is relative, this fella was already bigger than my neighbor's poodle the day I brought him home. Huge paws, clumsy gait, you know the look. Anyway, the first big job, even before the house training really kicked off, was figuring out a name.

It sounds easy, right? Just pick a name. But man, for a Wolfhound, it felt different. This dog is gonna be massive, majestic even. Couldn't just call him Spot or Max. Felt kinda... inadequate. Like putting a tiny hat on a giant.

Finding the Right Vibe

I started thinking about typical big dog names. Stuff like Thor, Zeus, Brutus. But honestly? They seemed too aggressive, too common maybe. My guy, even as a clumsy pup, had this gentle vibe. Sure, he's gonna be a giant, but more like a gentle giant, you know? So those warrior names just didn't click when I looked at his goofy face.

Then I thought, okay, Irish Wolfhound. Let's look at Irish names. Seemed logical. Went down a bit of a rabbit hole online. Found tons of names, some I couldn't even pronounce. It was getting complicated. Needed something strong, maybe a bit old-sounding, but easy enough for me to yell across the park without sounding completely weird.

The Shortlist Fiasco

I actually made a list. Yeah, I know, sounds super organized, but it was mostly me scribbling on a notepad while the pup chewed on my shoe. Here’s kinda what I had:

  • Finn: Liked this one. Classic Irish hero. But super popular for dogs, felt a bit like cheating.
  • Conan: Strong, definitely. But maybe too barbarian?
  • Oscar: Another famous Irish legend thing. Felt a bit too... sophisticated? Dunno.
  • Rory: Means 'red king'. My pup wasn't red, so, nah.
  • Bran: Means 'raven'. Cool, but again, popular.
  • Goliath: Too obvious, right? Big dog = Goliath. Lazy naming.

None of them really grabbed me. I'd call the pup one name for an hour, then try another. He didn't care, obviously. He just wanted belly rubs and food. Me? I was stressing over it. Felt like a big decision!

The 'Aha!' Moment

Then one afternoon, I was just watching him nap. He was all stretched out, taking up half the floor, looking peaceful but also kinda... noble? And the name just popped into my head: Seamus.

Seamus. It sounded Irish enough. Strong but not harsh. Easy to say. It just... fit. It wasn't trying too hard. It felt grounded, like the dog himself. I said it out loud a few times. "Seamus! C'mere boy!" Yeah, that worked. Felt right.

So, Seamus it is. Took a while, way longer than I expected, but finding the right name felt important. Now I just gotta teach him to actually respond to it. That's the next adventure, I guess.
