Saw a dog named 'Beretta' the other day. Seriously. Walked right past me in the park. Big ol' German Shepherd, looked friendly enough, but the name just struck me.

It got me thinking about this trend, people naming their dogs after guns. Remington, Colt, Wesson... even Trigger. Heard that one a few times. Guess it sounds tough, makes the dog seem intimidating or something? I don't know.
Remembering Old Man Hemlock
Made me think of old man Hemlock from back when I lived near the woods. He wasn't actually that old, maybe late 50s, but grumpy as hell. He had this scruffy mutt he called 'Ruger'. The dog itself was mostly harmless, spent its days tied to a runner, barking at squirrels.
But Hemlock, he was something else. Always had some project going on in his yard that involved loud banging or sawing, usually right when you were trying to relax. One summer, he decided to build this massive, ugly shed right near the property line. Didn't check the zoning, didn't talk to anyone.
So, I went over there. Tried to talk sense into him. Showed him the town bylaws. Pointed out it was way too close to my side. He just grunted. Said something about 'his land'.
- I checked with the town planning office. Got the paperwork.
- Went back to Hemlock. Showed him the official documents.
- He just glared, mumbled something about 'government interference'.
- Dude actually put up 'No Trespassing' signs facing my yard after that.
The whole thing dragged on for weeks. Had to get the town inspector involved. What a headache. They finally made him move the shed back a few feet. He never spoke to me again after that, just glared whenever he saw me. His dog 'Ruger' still barked at squirrels, didn't seem to care much either way.
It's funny, the names people choose. Sometimes feels like they're trying too hard, you know? Like naming your dog 'Gunner' or 'Ruger' is supposed to say something about you. Me? I just call my dog 'Buddy'. Simple. Does the trick.
