What makes evolve salmon dog food stand out? Learn about its wholesome ingredients for happy dogs.
Okay, so here’s the deal with that Evolve Salmon dog food I tried out for my buddy, Rex.

Finding Something New
Rex wasn't exactly struggling with his old food, but let's just say his enthusiasm was kinda… meh. Plus, his coat wasn't as shiny as it used to be. I figured maybe a change would do him good. I'd heard folks talking about how salmon is good for dogs, you know, the omega-3 stuff for skin and coat. Sounded alright to me.
Giving Evolve Salmon a Shot
I was at the store, looking at the massive wall of dog food bags. It’s overwhelming, right? Saw the Evolve brand, noticed the salmon one. The price wasn't crazy high, which is always a plus. I picked up the bag and had a quick look at the ingredients listed on the back. Deboned salmon right there at the top. Okay, fair enough. Also saw chicken meal, sweet potatoes, peas... seemed like decent stuff, not just fillers. Decided to grab a bag and see what Rex thought.
The Switch and Rex's Reaction
Got home, opened the bag. It didn't smell overly fishy, which I appreciated. Just smelled like... dog food. The kibble size was pretty standard, nothing weird there.
Now, I didn't want to just dump the new stuff in his bowl cold turkey. Did the whole gradual mix thing over a week or so:
- Day 1-2: Mostly old food, just a sprinkle of the Evolve.
- Day 3-4: About 75% old, 25% new.
- Day 5-6: Half and half.
- Day 7: Mostly Evolve, just a bit of the old stuff.
- Day 8: Full bowl of Evolve Salmon.
Rex didn't seem to mind the transition at all. He ate it right up from the start. No upset stomach, no turning his nose up at it. He actually seemed a bit more interested at meal times, which was nice to see. Dogs definitely know when something smells good, and maybe that salmon aroma was doing it for him.
What I Noticed
We stuck with the Evolve Salmon for a good few months. Honestly, I did notice his coat seemed a bit better. Maybe a bit softer, definitely looked shinier under the light. Could be the salmon, could be coincidence, who knows for sure? But it seemed like a positive change. His energy levels were normal, digestion seemed fine – solid poops, no issues there. So, thumbs up from Rex, basically.
Later on, I did hear some chatter online about Evolve having had a couple of recalls in the past, and something about warnings to the parent company. That gave me pause for a second, gotta admit. You always want the best and safest stuff for your dog. But, like I said, Rex did absolutely fine on it during the time he was eating it. No problems whatsoever for us personally.
Final Thoughts
So, yeah, that was my experience with the Evolve Salmon recipe. It seemed like a solid food, especially considering the price point. The ingredients looked decent on paper, and most importantly, Rex liked it and seemed to do well on it. His coat looked good. If you're looking for a salmon-based food that won't break the bank, it might be worth checking out. Every dog is different, of course, but it worked out okay for us.
