Okay, so I wanted to share something I went through recently with my dog, Max. He just suddenly decided he didn't want to go for walks. Like, total standstill at the door. Very weird for him, he usually loves getting out.

Figuring Out the Problem

First thing, I thought, is he hurt? He wasn't limping or anything obvious when just moving around the house, but walks are different. So, I started checking him over. Real gentle-like, you know?

• Checked his paws – looked between the pads for anything stuck, like a stone or a thorn. Nothing.
• Felt his legs – gently squeezed along the muscles, checked the joints for any flinching or soreness. Seemed okay.
• Ran my hands down his back – sometimes back problems can make dogs not want to move much. He didn't seem bothered.

So, physically, he seemed alright on my first check. Didn't rule it out completely, but no smoking gun there.

Looking at Other Stuff

Next, I thought about what else could be going on. Maybe it wasn't him, maybe it was the walk itself?

Was it too hot? Too cold? We had some weird weather, but he stopped wanting to go even on nice days. So, probably not the weather.

Was he scared of something on our usual route? Maybe a loud noise he heard last time? Construction maybe? We tried going a different way, a really quiet path he usually likes. Still didn't want to budge much past the driveway.

Then I wondered, was he just bored of the same old walk? Or maybe feeling a bit down? Hard to tell sometimes, right?

Trying Things Out & The 'Aha!' Moment

I spent a couple of days just trying short, easy trips. Lots of encouragement, brought his favorite treats. He'd go a little way, but then just plant his feet. Definitely wasn't his usual self. I was getting pretty close to calling the vet, thinking maybe it was something internal I couldn't see, maybe an infection or something making him feel weak.

But before I did, I was putting his harness on one morning, and I noticed he flinched just a tiny bit when I clipped it. It wasn't loud, just a little hesitation. I took a closer look at the harness. It looked fine, but then I felt underneath where the straps went. And bam! There was a spot under his armpit area that looked a little red, like it had been rubbing him raw. Not terrible, but definitely enough to make walking uncomfortable, especially with the pulling and movement.

The harness must have shifted weirdly or maybe he gained a tiny bit of weight, making it rub just wrong. It wasn't obvious until I really looked closely right after seeing that flinch.

Getting Back to Normal

So, I ditched the harness for a few days. Let the red spot heal up completely. We just did very short potty breaks outside on his collar and leash. Then, I got him a different style of harness, one that fit much better and didn't come close to that sensitive spot.

Guess what? First time with the new harness, he was hesitant for like two seconds, then practically dragged me out the door! Back to his old self, sniffing everything, happy tail wagging. It was such a relief.

Just goes to show, sometimes it's the simplest thing. You gotta really observe your buddy and check everything, even the stuff you use every day like a harness. Glad we figured it out without a big vet visit this time!
