Why should I choose a butter dog toy? Find out all the benefits that make it a really great choice for your furry friend.
Making That Butter Dog Toy Thing
So, the other day, Max – that's my dog, you know – he absolutely shredded his favorite squeaky hedgehog. Just total annihilation. And looking at the prices for decent replacements, man, it adds up. Plus, I was kinda bored, stuck inside 'cause the weather was just miserable, typical stuff.

I remembered seeing some goofy food-shaped dog toys online and thought, why not try making one? I had some leftover fabric scraps from an old project I messed up ages ago. Figured I'd give it a shot.
Gathering the Bits and Pieces
Didn't really have a plan, just rummaged through my craft box. Here’s what I ended up grabbing:
- Some sturdy-ish yellow fabric (this old canvas stuff).
- A bit of white felt, thought it might look like the wrapper maybe?
- Needle and thread – the heavy-duty kind, hopefully dog-proof.
- Stuffing from an old pillow I was gonna throw out anyway. Waste not, want not, right?
- Scissors, obviously.
Didn't have a squeaker, which was a bummer. Max loves squeakers. But hey, work with what you got.
Putting it Together (Sort Of)
Okay, so I decided to make it look like a stick of butter. Seemed simple enough. I cut out two sort of rectangular shapes from the yellow canvas. Tried to make them even, but let's be honest, they were a bit wonky. My cutting skills are... rustic.
Then I started sewing the yellow pieces together, inside out first, you know the drill. Left one end open. This took way longer than I thought. My fingers aren't exactly nimble, and the canvas was tougher than I remembered. Snapped the thread twice. Had to take a tea break just to calm down.
Once three sides were sewn (more like wrestled into submission), I turned it right-side out. Looked vaguely like a yellow brick. Progress!
Stuffing it was the next adventure. Tried to get it packed in there pretty tight so it wouldn't flatten instantly. Got stuffing everywhere. Seriously, looked like it snowed inside for a bit. Finally got it mostly full.
Sewing the last end shut was the fiddliest part. Tried to make the stitches neat, but ended up looking a bit Frankenstein-ed. Good enough for a dog toy, I figured. I skipped the white felt wrapper idea – seemed like too much effort by that point, and probably the first thing Max would rip off anyway.

The Big Reveal
Called Max over. Showed him the lumpy yellow... thing. "Look! Butter!" I said. Not sure why I called it that, just popped into my head. Maybe the color?
He sniffed it cautiously. Then he grabbed it. Success! He started thrashing it around, whipping his head back and forth like he does. Ran off with it to his bed and started chewing on a corner. Looked pretty happy.
Honestly, making it was kind of fun, in a frustrating sort of way. Took maybe an hour, cost nothing but time and a bit of sanity. And seeing Max enjoy something I actually cobbled together myself? Pretty satisfying, gotta say. It probably won't last forever – my sewing skills guarantee that – but for a rainy afternoon project, totally worth it. Beats staring at the wall, anyway.
