So, my dog has this habit. Destroys toys like it's his job. Plush ones? Forget it, maybe five minutes of life, tops. I was getting tired of buying new stuff every week.

I started looking for something tougher, maybe something a bit different. Stumbled across this cactus-looking dog toy online. Looked kind of goofy, but the description mentioned it was made for dogs that like to shred. Figured, why not give it a shot?

Getting the Cactus Home

Ordered it, arrived a few days later. Pulled it out of the box. It had these floppy arms, felt pretty sturdy. The main part was like a spiky ball, but covered in fabric. Gave it a squeeze – yep, loud squeaker inside. Okay, stage one passed, my dog loves squeakers.

Called him over. He gave it the usual sniff inspection. Then he grabbed one of the arms and started whipping it back and forth. That seemed fun for him, the 'whip-n-flip' thing the description mentioned, I guess. Then he discovered the squeaker. Game on.

Playtime and Destruction (Sort Of)

He went at it pretty hard for the next few days. Chewing, tossing, squeaking. I noticed something interesting. He started to rip the outer green fabric. Usually, that's the end game, stuffing everywhere. But this one? It had another layer underneath! Different color, different feel. It was like a surprise reveal.

• The squeaker ball: Inside the main body, this thing was pretty tough. Even after he got through the outer layers, the spiky ball itself became a bonus toy. Still squeaks, too.
• Those arms: Good for thrashing around, but they were the first weak point. He eventually chewed them off. Expected that, really.
• Rip & Reveal: This was the clever part. Seeing that second layer definitely kept him engaged longer than usual. He seemed determined to see what was fully underneath.

Now, was it indestructible? Nah, of course not. With my dog, probably nothing is. But it lasted way, way longer than the usual plush toys. Weeks, instead of minutes or hours. The main spiky ball part is still around, actually.

It's funny, he seems pretty attached to what's left of it. Carries the spiky ball part around sometimes. Maybe it's like they say, dogs see toys as their own property. He definitely acts like this cactus, or what remains of it, is his treasure.

So yeah, the cactus toy experiment? Pretty successful, I'd say. Kept him busy, lasted a decent while, and the rip-apart feature was a neat twist. Finding toys that work is trial and error, mostly error, but this one was a win.
